Manual Overrides
Even with automatic location features, Astrolapp offers manual controls for a personalized experience. You can manually specify any time period, whether in the past or future, to witness changes in the sky. Override your current location to explore celestial sights from anywhere on Earth. You also have the ability to toggle optional layers like constellation lines as needed. These flexible controls put you in charge of your stargazing Adventures.
Robust Database
Astrolapp's extensive backend database fuels Live annotations and includes over 9000 of the brightest stars detailed by spectral type, 88 officially recognized constellations, all planets down to Pluto, and various satellites. Whenever you point the app at the sky, it provides detailed identifiers for the major celestial objects within view. The comprehensive nature of this database ensures that users receive informative insights and guiDance while exploring the cosmos.
Additional Features
★ Experience no sounds and no advertisements — just the tranquility of the night sky!
★ Enjoy rapid and precise live mode thanks to Kalman Filter technology (requires a compass/magnetometer in the device).
★ Access a star map mode featuring planar projection similar to ancient astronomical clocks and Medieval astrolabes.
★ Track the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planetary bodies including Pluto.
★ Refer to the 9096 brightest stars (Bright Star Catalog) and the official 88 constellations as acknowledged by the IAU.
★ Get accurate rise, set, and transit times for all celestial bodies, down to the minute.
★ Observe moon phases and planetary phases, along with planet retrogradiCity.
★ View numerical position data for stars and solar system bodies across different coordinate systems including heliocentric, geocentric, and topocentric.
★ See a graphical representation of the ecliptic and zodiac sign placements (available only in star map mode).
★ Utilize real-time displays or scroll manually through different centuries.
★ Automatically calculate geographic coordinates or manually select locations via a map to save.
★ Determine local solar time, local sidereal time, and Greenwich sidereal time.
★ Identify the colors of stars based on their spectral classifications.
★ Activate night mode featuring monochrome black/red visuals.
Automatic Location
For maximum ease of use, Astrolapp autonomously identifies your location, providing sky views tailored to your exact vantage on Earth. It computes longitude, latitude, altitude, and other relevant data to deliver real-time celestial Imagery. To add extra precision, the app calculates both local solar time and sidereal time. Thus, your distinct night sky is illuminated!
Features
Your gateway to the mesmerizing starry sky
Simply direct your device toward the sky to identify planets, stars, and constellations displayed on your screen. Revel in Astrolapp’s highly responsive and remarkably accurate Live Mode, enhanced by its visually appealing and user-friendly interface. (Note: Live Mode functionality requires a built-in compass.)
The stars are colored true to their actual hues and are labeled according to standards set by the International Astronomical Union. Users may see the 88 constellations with or without their names displayed. A powerful search function aids exploration, directing an arrow to locate any star, planet, or constellation above you.
When tapping on a star or planet, Astrolapp highlights its trajectory across the sky throughout the night (or day). Furthermore, it provides rise and set timings for any celestial Body, detailed to the minute, alongside current position data presented in an organized tabular format on a separate pull-out display.
Astrolapp captures your existing location automatically to Craft the starry sky you currently observe. If you wish to visualize what the sky looks like in another part of the world, use the integrated map to select an alternative site effortlessly.
By default, Astrolapp shows the present sky, but if you're curious about how it appeared last month or at significant historical events decades or centuries ago, simply access this feature to see those skies change rapidly!
As an alternative or for devices lacking a built-in compass, Astrolapp presents a star-map-mode. Toggle between display types with the tap of the '3D' button. Both modes inherently provide the same core information and functionalities described previously.
Star-map-mode: An interactive celestial map akin to an astronomical clock
This visualization method illustrates the dynamics of the Solar System and the movements of stars and constellations throughout each day and year. It employs a planar projection of the celestial sphere used historically in medieval astrolabes and astronomical clocks.
Astrolapp shows the celestial sphere from the perspective of one observing from the celestial north pole. From here, the sun moves clockwise around the center of the display within 24 hours, mirroring its path along the celestial equator as if on a clock face. The moon and planets travel paths slightly varying from a full circle each day, reflecting their respective motions within the solar system.
